After only six races in the World Championship the young driver sponsored by SCX® from the start earns his first podium position by coming third in Great Britain
The rider from Cervera (Lleida) becomes the youngest Spaniard to step up to the podium in the World Championship and the second youngest ever
On Sunday 22nd June Marc Márquez, the young 15 year-old rider sponsored by SCX®, became the youngest Spaniard ever to step up to the podium in a motorcycling World Championship and the second youngest of all time, when he earned third place in the 125cc category at the British Grand Prix. At just 15 years and 126 days, Márquez beat the record held by Dani Pedrosa, currently racing in MotoGP.
Márquez, carrying an extraordinary ten kilos on his bike to bring him up to the obligatory 136, had to battle right to the finish to hold on to the prized third place on the British Donington Park circuit. The young rider from Cervera (Lleida) beat competitors with the experience of Sergio Gadea and finished by vying for second place with the Italian Di Meglio, current leader of the 125cc World Championship. Along with Márquez, the local rider Scott Redding made history when, at 15 years and 173 days, he came first, so beating another record, that of the youngest winner of a World Championship race. This honour had been held by the Italian Marco Melandri for ten years.
The rider Marc Márquez comes from the Monlau Competición school of mechanics and riders, run by Emilio Alzamora. Last year he competed in the 125cc Spanish Speed Championship or CEV, where he was already surprising people with the skilful riding which has finally brought him to the World Championship. This season Márquez is competing in the World Championship as part of the prestigious Repsol KTM team.
SCX® has been with Márquez since his début in motorcycling at the age of 12, in yet another example of the brand's commitment to youth sport. Other initiatives in which SCX® has played its part include sponsorship of the Mercedes Junior Cup youth regatta, the Master Junior Formula and the youth skiing championships held at the winter sports station of La Molina.
