Subaru forester

Subaru forester
The Forester now comes with Subaru’s excellent boxer diesel engine. It’s smooth, powerful and torquey – ideal for towing. But the horsey types have been made to wait. Subaru launched the Forester back in April, but has watched buyers digress to Kugas, X-Trails, RAV4s and Freelanders. All of which had diesel power. Now, Subaru hope to win back their loyal customers with an oil-burner of their own.
It’s a bloody good one too, and well worth the wait. We’re familiar with Subaru boxers in petrol form, but this is a first in diesel guise. We’ve driven it in the Legacy, and liked it. Don’t expect the usual turbodiesel traits though; the boxer has less lag and, appropriately, a more instant punch. It likes to rev too, so you can hold on to gears longer. It even sounds quite interesting. It’s a diesel with soul.
So the Forester will whisk an equine load around with ease. It has self-levelling suspension as standard too, an improvement over the old car.
But improving on the old Forester doesn’t necessarily mean it is good enough. Engine aside, there’s little to compliment. The interior trim is from an Impreza, and feels a bit cheap (you’d be disappointed if you’d forked out £25,495 for the top-spec version).
And, at speed, the ride is horribly choppy. Taking a series of bumps feels like bouncing off a springboard, only to land on a bouncy castle. You just can’t get this thing to settle down, without killing speed. Seems the engineers did a fine job on the engine, but forgot all about the damping. Which is surprising, considering the suspension is a posh, multi-link affair.
None of which will matter to Forester buyers. They’ll be more interested in its four-wheel-drive and rugged durability. No pretentions, no fuss, no drama. In fact, the Forester is slightly dull – for once, a lifestyle SUV that doesn’t bang on about being a lifestyle SUV.
The boxer diesel makes it into the Impreza later this year too. With any luck, that should provide an altogether more exciting form of horsepower.

New Project: Time Attack Car

With the R33 GT-R rebuild nearing completion, its time to to start a new project. It has always been my intention to purchase, rebuild and track a car. Basically, I'm looking for a road legal track car to carry out time attack runs in Sepang International Circuit (SIC). Now the next question is, what car to get?

Unlike in Australia, the UK or the States, we Malaysians are shafted when it comes to used cars. In Australia for example, you could purchase a decent road legal Nissan S13 or S14 for as little as RM10,000 - RM15,000 ringgit. Due to the high Malaysian import tax on cars (300% import duties on all foreign cars), used car prices are similarly affected. What this means is that a used S13 or S14 will probably cost three times as much in Malaysia a compared to a similar car in Australia. This makes it a challenge for the average person to pursue his or her motoring dream, to build a drift machine or to own a dedicated track car.

We now move on to the question of what make and model would be suitable for a time attack car. I've narrowed it down to a few budget (and not so budget) vehicles, seeing as this should be cost saving exercise. After all, a time attack car would require a further outlay of money in order to make it track ready.

And here are the contenders with their pros and cons:

  Nissan S13 Silvia Coupe

Pros
  • Good RWD base to build up from
  • Easy to get power out of the Nissan SR20 engine
  • Option to retro-fit parts from other Nissan models
  • Massive amount of aftermarket parts
  • Huge supply of halfcuts and spare parts that are already in Malaysia
Cons
  • Can be expensive to purchase
  • Difficult to find one in good condition and tastefully modified
  •
    Honda Integra DC2

    Pros
    • Light weight
    • Rigid chassis
    • Loads of aftermarket parts available
    • Plenty of halfcuts and spare parts that already in Malaysia
    Cons
    • Its a FWD, meaning the front wheels have to not only steer the car but also slow it down
    • A bit expensive to produce big power being an N/A car
    • Parts can be expensive

Mazda MX-5 (First Gen / NA)

        Pros
        • Extremely capable chassis
        • Engine responds well to mods, especially when turbocharged
        Cons
        • Manual units are rare in Malaysia
        • Turbo kit has to be sourced from abroad (costly)
        • Not as many halfcuts and spare parts compared to the other cars on this list
        • Cars in good condition still command high prices
        • Standard 1.6 N/A engine is gutless and seriously lacking in torque

        Subaru WRX GC8

        Pros
        • Great AWD race car platform
        • Capable car even in stock form
        • Option to retro-fit parts from STI models
        Cons
        • Expensive to purchase
        • Finding one in good condition is difficult
        • Parts aren't cheap
        • Stock GC8 WRX gearbox is crap
        • Full STI conversion costs a lot of money
        • Can be expensive to get big power out of the Subaru EJ engine

         Mitsubishi Evo II to VIII

        Pros
        • Amazing AWD race car platform
        • Very capable even in stock form
        • Some models are 'race ready' (i.e. Evo VI Tommi Makinen Edition)
        Cons
        • Very expensive to purchase
        • Difficult to find genuine Evos in good condition
        • Will be expensive to produce big power after a certain point

So which car to get? Find out in the next blog posting!

Subaru Isle of Man TT Record Attempt - A must watch!

If you guys haven't watched this, you seriously have to. Especially the last bit where the driver, Mark Higgins (Isle of Mann native and multiple rally champion), talks through the "moment" at Brey Hill when he momentarily loses, and then regains, control of the WRX STI at more than 250 kph!

The in-car and out-car footages weren't sped up and the video comes complete with overhead helicopter shots. You can actually see the heli from the out-car video feed, as it flies ahead of the Subby, throughout the attempt. Lastly, watch it all in glorious 1080p HD. You won't regret it!

Subaru of America, Inc. has released a new YouTube video of the 2011 Subaru WRX STI setting an all-time course record for the historic Isle of Man TT Mountain Course. The 5 minute 25 second video highlights in graphic detail the speed and drama surrounding rally driver Mark Higgins' lap that averaged 115.356 MPH. After the run, Higgins talks through the "moment" at Brey Hill when he momentarily loses, and then regains, control of the WRX STI at more than 150 MPH.

Driving a US specification 2011 Subaru WRX STI, Higgins achieved speeds of 162 MPH and a lapped time of 19 minutes 37 seconds over the 37-mile track, navigating more than 200 corners.

"This is one of the most daunting tracks I have ever driven, and the most terrifying," said Higgins, a Manx native. "We were only able to get two practice runs and on our second practice I had the biggest "moment" of my career. We had a passenger on the run and so coming into Bray Hill at more than 150 MPH, the extra weight compressed the suspension more than on previous runs and shifted the Subaru to the left and then right as I corrected--it was a real tank slapper. The whole thing went by so quickly that we never slowed below 110 MPH, and then we were back on the power. It was amazing and the helicopter shots really show just how hairy it really was."

The WRX STI was a production US spec car running a standard 305 HP turbocharged boxer engine. Some safety modifications were made. The Subaru was equipped with a Lifeline fire suppression system, Hockley Motorsports roll cage, motordrive competition seats, Mintex brake pads (but stock calipers and rotors), and a louder open exhaust to warn spectators of the on-coming car. The speed limiter was turned off to allow a higher maximum speed; off-the shelf Tien springs and dampers were added to accommodate the numerous high-speed jumps on the circuit, sending the WRX STI almost four feet off the ground. The car ran on street legal Pirelli P Zero Trofeo tires.

2011 Subaru Tribeca Luxury Concept Engine and Performance

2011 Subaru Tribeca Review Specs Prices Pictures

The Subaru Tribeca may be uniquely designed for getting out there, but at Subaru, we put just as much emphasis on not leaving it out there. First, we build vehicles for maximum durability, because more time spent on the road is less time in a landfill. It’s why 95% of the vehicles we’ve built in the last 10 years are still on the road today.1 We also work diligently to cut waste before the car ever rolls out of the factory. In 2004, Subaru of Indiana Automotive, Inc. (SIA) became the first manufacturing facility in the U.S. to reach zero landfill status nothing from its manufacturing efforts ever goes into a landfill. Subaru facilities in Japan have achieved similar goals in reusing and recycling.

              Quicker Response
There are only four small patches of rubber that keep you in control of your vehicle. The more your tires are engaged the more control you have. Subaru keeps more power routed to all four tires than some other systems that only fully engage as a reaction to slippage that has already occurred. Every Subaru is built for AWD from the ground up. This allows us to build a balanced, symmetrical drivetrain that is free of the extra components some other systems need to get power to all four wheels. This symmetry and balance means stability that helps make driving your Subaru safer and agility that makes it more fun.

              2011 Subaru Tribeca

Wherever, whenever, or however you drive, control and confidence come from one place where your tires meet the road. Subaru has spent nearly 40 years developing a system to get the most of those few points of contact, for traction and control that will help you feel empowered on rough roads and in bad weather. A system that can make smooth roads more engaging, and can help you avoid danger with greater surety. Discover the balance and stability that Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive delivers, knowing that your Subaru is ready to get you out there wherever that may be.

2011 Subaru Tribeca 6-cylinder Boxer Engine
Every 2011 Subaru Tribeca is powered by the 3.6-liter 6-cylinder SUBARU BOXER engine, the largest engine Subaru offers. With 256 horsepower, it delivers more than enough power to inspire confidence in virtually any driving condition. And with a unique horizontally opposed design, that power is delivered with exceptional smoothness and stability. The 2011 Tribeca also comes standard with the smooth-shifting 5-speed automatic transmission featuring a manual shift mode. This means you can take manual control over how the Tribeca shifts for greater involvement and access to power when you want it.

              2011 Subaru Tribeca

2011 Subaru Legacy Stylish High Performance Boxer Engine

2011 Subaru Legacy Review, Specs and Prices

The History Subaru Legacy began with a 5-door wagon or 4-door sedan body styles with FWD and an optional full-time AWD package, and was introduced in North America, the UK, Germany, the Benelux region of Northern Europe, Japan and Australia. Options included 4-channel ABS, licensed from Bosch and air suspension height control, which lowered the vehicle at speeds above 50 mph (80.5 km/h), and also allowed the driver to increase the vehicle's ground clearance for off-road conditions. The Subaru Legacy is a mid-size car built by Japanese manufacturer Subaru since 1989, and is available as a sedan or wagon. Part of the original design goals for the Legacy model was to provide Subaru a vehicle in which they could compete in the lucrative North American midsize market. The Legacy bears the name Liberty in Australia out of deference for Legacy Australia, a veterans' assistance organization. As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacies have been built since its 1989 introduction.

              2011 Subaru Legacy

Subaru had earned a reputation of building vehicles that were regarded as "quirky" and other Asian manufacturers were bringing more upscale and conventional appearing models to the market. The Legacy broke with many Subaru traditions, such as no longer locating the spare tire in the engine compartment, behind the engine and above the transmission. The Legacy was an all-new model, and positioned above the Leone, XT, Justy, and kei cars Rex and Sambar in Subaru's model range at the time. The Legacy also introduced an entirely new flat-4 engine series, called the Subaru EJ engine, which was quieter and more powerful than the previous Subaru EA engine.

The First Generation Subaru Engine is DOHC 2.0 liter turbocharged 217 bhp (162 kW; 220 PS) EJ20G engine was introduced in the Japan-spec Legacy RS in 1989 and later used in the Impreza WRX when it was introduced to Japan in 1992. International versions of the Legacy turbo were offered the DOHC 2.0 liter engine with a water-cooled intercooler starting with 1991, with a manual transmission only. The USA-spec EJ22T SOHC 2.2 liter 163 bhp (122 kW; 165 PS) turbo was not offered the water-cooled intercooler when it was introduced to them in 1991, and was available with either a manual or automatic transmission.

              2011 Subaru Legacy

Begin each day with the exception to the rule. Begin it with a vehicle that mingles spaciousness with responsiveness, power with responsibility and capability with captivation. A vehicle that inspires you with confidence because of its renowned safety, while at the same time begs you to push it further, and to relish every curve life throws at you. Begin each day with the 2011 Subaru Legacy, and its intelligent solutions to all of your driving needs, and you’ll know what a daily commute should really feel like. There are only four small patches of rubber that keep you in control of your vehicle. The more your tires are engaged the
more control you have. Subaru keeps more power routed to all four tires than some other systems that only fully engage as a reaction to slippage that has already occurred.

Every 2011 Subaru Legacy is built for AWD from the ground up. This allows us to build a balanced, symmetrical drivetrain that is free of the extra components some other systems need to get power to all four wheels. This symmetry and balance means stability that helps make driving your Subaru safer and agility that makes it more fun. Wherever, whenever, or however you drive, control and confidence come from
one place where your tires meet the road. Subaru has spent nearly 40 years developing a system to get the most of those few points of contact, for traction and control that can make curves more exciting, acceleration more dynamic, and your ability to avoid danger more surefooted. Discover the driving satisfaction that
the balance and stability of Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive delivers, knowing that this is just one of the many ways a Subaru can inspire.

Experience smooth performance and save money at the same time. Lineartronic CVT is an innovative technology that can reduce the amount you spend on fuel. Available on Legacy 2.5i models, it eliminates the need to shift, thereby preserving momentum. And your engine always stays in its optimal rev range for maximum efficiency. In automatic mode, it infinitely adjusts the transmission to match your needs. Or use the paddle shifters and 6-speed manual mode for quick access to power and torque on the fly.
Throw the 2011 Subaru Legacy into a corner, and forget everything you think about driving a spacious sedan. With its unique design advantages, the Legacy doesn’t sacrifice athleticism to give you a roomy and comfortable interior.
